Shitsurakuen canon | Puella Magi Madoka Magica
This is an AU of Shitsurakuen based on and roughly following the plot of Puella Magi Madoka Magica. For reference in this AU, Koharu roughly takes Mami's place in the series as the guide and the one who explains the world to Reiko and Sora. Sora takes Madoka's as the ray of hope who brings everyone together, as she does in the original canon.
Reiko becomes a magical girl shortly after meeting koharu and tries to defend Sora and be her big sister. She attempts this even though she isn't really equipped to and doesn't have the experience of the other girls. Reiko is less of an actual big sister figure and more of one who is trying to be one. She resembles more of the Reiko pre-series than the more confident one we see. She's trying to stand up and fix things herself but it never works out.
Hiyo's sister became a magical girl before her and when Hiyo became one, her sister tried to give her all the grief seeds to protect her. Her sister ended up turning into a witch and was killed. Hiyo hates the whole system, including other magical girls.
Yuki is a magical girl who spent her early life being standoffish and found herself to not be useful. She found her inspiration in Sora and gained confidence from her and going back in time again and again to save her. She's still the snarky girl we know, but with a layer of sadness and purpose from all the times she's seen Sora die.
Tomoko is a shy magical girl who follows Sora in school at times. Tomoko hides from her responsibility and pretends she isn't a magical girl at all. She hates the fighting and only does it when her soul gem grows dark
Once upon a time, Koharu Izaki was a lonely lonely girl. Her life was a stream of bullying and harrassment from the boys at her exclusive school. The girls were sympathetic but ultimately useless in preventing it and as time went on, Koharu began to break.
But she was visited by a creature called Kyuubey. He saw her sorrow and said he would grant her a wish, if she would only help him defeat witches.
Her wish was to have never been bullied by the boys or have never caught their eye. Kyuubey easily granted it and she was given her soul seed and made a vow to protect this town against witches.
Her bruises were gone, but the memories still remained. Still, the boys at school no longer bothered her, nor the ones on the walk home. It was a dream come true...until she realized the girls didn't speak to her. The sympathy was gone, only cold hatred for the girl who was now immune to the boy's teasing--for it had always been a problem. The girls tormented her, ignored her in class, called her rude names behind her back, and ostracized her in every way.
A wish is easily turned against you, Koharu learned. For she had only asked for boys not to bully her. She couldn't ask for a new wish. What was done was done and she had learned her lesson.
Her first battle was the next night, in the strange twisted world of oversized plants and lakes and the witch was strong, very strong. Even with her rifle and the various bullets she learned she had access to, it was an uphill battle. Her strategy could only consist of ducking and hiding, taking an ill-aimed shot when the opportunity struck. It was sheer luck that won her that battle, a shot taken from the shelter of a daisy leaf and she wept as she collected her grief seed, the praise of Kyuubey falling on deaf ears. The fight took nearly all night and she missed class that day, wondering if the switching of bullies was worth this new life of fighting for every step.
Quietly, she moved schools, but kept fighting the witches, gathering grief seeds. It was all she could do, she had no choice. She had to make the best of her wish. It was her own fault after all. Her skill in battle grew over time, as did her warmth towards the girls at her new school, but she never shook that lingering fear of males.
A girl by the name of Sora Himoto saw her one night and desperately wished to become a Puella Magi as well. Koharu, for all her knowledge and misgivings, was more than happy to think she might have this brave girl as a partner, but a fellow Puella Magi, Yuki Yagizawa, was adamantly against it. Yuki desperately tried to keep Sora from ever coming in contact with Kyuubey, though she never told anyone why.
As time went on and the clashes between the various magical girls of the town grew more serious and more upsetting, Sora began to try to assert herself in the fights. She desperately just wanted everyone to get along, to help each other fight witches and bring calm and peace to these girls. Koharu trully believed in her, believed if anyone could bring that peace, Sora could.
Koharu was killed a bit later in the overall scheme than Mami, as Reiko had in fact become a magical girl by the time of Koharu's death. However, she was not present at the death as Sayaka was. It was just Koharu and Sora, Koharu fighting and protecting Sora from the monsters and being utterly elated that she might have Sora as a partner when this fight was all over. Of course, true to PMMM canon, that was never to be. The witch seemed dead and as Koharu turned to beam at Sora, everything went wrong. A slice of the witch's whip-like tentacles and Koharu was dead.
Canon point: Just after her death
Personality:
Koharu embodies many of the so-called 'princess' ideals. She's pretty, kind-hearted, mothering, self-sacrificing, somewhat servile and a fairly good cook. While she doesn't trust easily persay, she trusts completely. She has faith in Sora and she takes a lot of her strength from that. She's clearly the type of girl who is destined to be a follower, not a leader, even if her situation has forced her to become one. She likes helping others and takes a good measure of her self-worth from that. Her affection for those who help her is clear and she has no qualms about showing that affection. In fact she can be a bit too affectionate at times, but it's all part of her princess-ly charm right?
Once she trusts people, she makes friends fairly easily, looking for their good points. She can even be completely blind to the faults, preferring the idealized image. If a friend was putting up a smiling happy front, Koharu would accept it completely. She forgives easily, preferring to trust others as allies, even if others do not always agree. It's easier to forgive and push things to the past, as she generally loathes confrontations and harsh words.
Flirtations in general would be met with complete stammering blushes and she'd just try to change the subject. Even if she daydreams of rather naughty fantasies in her spare time, she's not sure how to take real life flirting. Her complete naivety with real relationships shows and she'd either pretend she didn't hear it or pretends to misunderstand it.
Koharu is still motherly, kind and thoughtful, but more somber than her canon counterpart. Her happy enthusiasm to help Sora and the others is tempered by caution and a firsthand knowledge of their situation. She's been hurt and seen the cruel way words can be twisted against you as weapons. She is, however, forever the optimist, believing in Sora's passionate cries that she can help--and later that she can change things. Yet, she has always planned for the worst, accepting that things may go badly, even if she hopes for the best.
Even in an AU, her relationship with Sora remains one of hope, admiration, and longing. She still fantasizes about Sora as her knight who can save her from this cycle of fighting. Of course they involve an element of romance and sexual longing, but she's a little more likely to do that in her spare time than in public now.
However, with the other girls, the situation has forced them to be at odds in many ways. Koharu truly wants to be friends and allies with the other girls but varying goals and motives have made things difficult. In the end, Koharu can't consider many of them friends but likes to call them comrades in her never ending battle. Sora's words of unity and hope are often repeated from Koharu and occasionally and in other worlds, they have sparked actual change.
She's still hesitant to speak to men and give them a chance to torment her, but she knows a little better about the girls. She does not distrust Kyuubey as much as she sees the failings in her wording and does not really blame him for the way her wish twisted things. She is optimistic about his motives, preferring to believe that he was only trying to save her from her suffering and she failed to provide him the wish that did that.
